Wind Generator Selection Criteria

Wind generator is another term for a wind turbine. Wind generators harness the wind and turn it into useable electricity. Wind turbines come in all sorts of sizes and capacities, from small wind turbines that produce enough energy for small jobs around the house to large turbines that produce enough power for many homes at a time.
If you are thinking of using wind power as an alternative power source for your property, you need to make sure your property has enough wind. This should be done to ensure a wind turbine system is a viable option for you.

Some things to think about before deciding a wind turbine will work for you:

  1. There needs to be at least an average wind speed of 10 MPH going through your property. But, for best results, a wind speed above 12 MPH is optimum.
  2. Your property needs to be on at least half an acre and not overlooked or surrounded by large trees or tall buildings.
  3. You need to check whether your local authority allows structures more than 42 feet tall to be erected in the area. Anything less than this will not provide the results you need.  But the tower height is determined by the fall of your land.
  4. Check that your local electricity supplier has an interconnection agreement for alternative power sources.

Once you establish your property is suitable for a wind generator then you need to determine the best place to site it to get the best results from your windpower. Remember, if you are having someone install your wind power system then it is an investment in your future. So, you want to make sure you get its position correct to maximize the results from your wind generator. The right position may be the difference between continuous frustration with your wind generator system or years of easy, reliable operation.

Towers need to be tall as wind speed increases the higher you go. Towers also get wind power systems above any air turbulence that is close to the ground. Turbulence is caused by things like mountains, trees and buildings. Be aware of stron vibrations caused by the wind turbine operating under excessive load.

There are two common types of towers used – guyed and monopole. The guyed tower has steel ropes to support it and is less expensive than a monopole. The advantage of a monopole tower is that most are designed to be lowered to the ground for easy maintenance and during bad weather to protect them from damage.
If you think you are able then you can build a wind power system on your property for a fraction of the cost. Do your research to find out whether wind power is a good alternative power option for you.
